InventorIA vs Snipe-IT: open-source vs AI-powered ITAM

Snipe-IT is the de facto open-source choice for hardware asset management — well-built, mature, and free if you self-host. InventorIA is a newer AI-powered SaaS that covers hardware and SaaS licenses. Here's the honest trade-off between the two.

What Snipe-IT is

Snipe-IT is a mature open-source IT asset management application, distributed under the AGPL and built on PHP/Laravel. It is one of the best-known free ITAM tools, with a strong API, a clean check-in/check-out flow for hardware, and a large community of self-hosters. A commercial cloud-hosted version is available from the project. Snipe-IT focuses on physical asset management — laptops, monitors, accessories — and does it well. It does not natively cover SaaS license discovery or include an AI assistant.

What InventorIA is

InventorIA is an AI-powered IT asset and SaaS license platform delivered as a managed SaaS. It covers hardware lifecycle, SaaS license seats, contract vault, renewal alerts, and an AI agent that answers questions about your fleet in plain English. It runs in six languages, hosts data in the EU on Hetzner Germany, and offers a free tier (50 assets, 2 users). Plus is $79/mo, Pro is $259/mo, Enterprise is custom. 14-day Pro trial, no credit card.

Migration notes

Snipe-IT's REST API makes export straightforward — a single script can dump assets, users, categories, and check-out history to CSV. InventorIA's import flow accepts those CSVs directly and the AI agent maps the columns. Custom fields carry over as structured attributes. Most teams migrate in an afternoon. We recommend running the two systems in parallel for 30 days, then decommissioning the Snipe-IT VM once you trust the new source of truth.

Frequently asked questions

Is Snipe-IT really free?

The self-hosted version is free under AGPL, but "free" assumes you already pay for a Linux admin, a database, backups, and TLS — and that their time is essentially zero. For most teams the total cost of running Snipe-IT in production is comparable to a SaaS plan, once you include ops time.

Can InventorIA do everything Snipe-IT does?

For hardware tracking — assignments, statuses, custom fields, audit trail, mobile scan, label generation — yes. The areas where Snipe-IT goes deeper are around community plugins and tightly customised PHP forks. If your team has built a custom Snipe-IT, you'll lose that on migration.

What about data ownership and export?

InventorIA gives you full CSV/JSON export at any time. Your data lives in the EU on Hetzner Germany, and the contract guarantees export and deletion within 30 days of cancellation. If sovereignty is the only reason you'd self-host, EU-resident SaaS may already meet your requirement.
